Seasonal mixed layer heat budget of the tropical Atlantic Ocean

چکیده
[1] This paper addresses the atmospheric and oceanic causes of the seasonal cycle of sea surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Atlantic on the basis of direct observations. Data sets include up to 4 years (September 1997 to February 2002) of measurements from moored buoys of the Pilot Research Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA), near-surface drifting buoys, and a blended satellite in situ SST product. We analyze the mixed layer heat balance at eight PIRATA mooring locations and find that the seasonal cycles of latent heat loss and absorbed shortwave radiation are responsible for seasonal SST variability in the northwest basin (8 N–15 N along 38 W). Along the equator (10 W–35 W), contributions from latent heat loss are diminished, while horizontal temperature advection and vertical entrainment contribute significantly. Zonal temperature advection is especially important during boreal summer near the western edge of the cold tongue, while horizontal eddy temperature advection, which most likely results from tropical instability waves, opposes temperature advection by the mean flow. The dominant balance in the southeast (6 S–10 S along 10 W) is similar to that in the northwest, with both latent heat loss and absorbed solar radiation playing important roles.

Diapycnal heat flux and mixed layer heat budget within the Atlantic Cold Tongue
The tropical Atlantic ocean plays a key role for climate variability in sensitive regions of the surrounding continents: Previous studies suggest that inter-annual variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the equatorial Atlantic impacts rainfall variability over northeast Brazil and the coastal regions surrounding the Gulf of Guinea (Chang et al. 2006; Kushnir et al. 2006; Brandt et al. ...
متن کاملSeasonal salt budget of the northwestern tropical Atlantic Ocean along 38W
The western tropical Atlantic has a complex salt budget, with strong seasonal river discharge, precipitation, evaporation, and the confluence of different water masses all contributing. This paper addresses the atmospheric and oceanic causes of the seasonal budget of mixed layer salinity based on direct observations. Data sets include up to five years (September 1997 December 2002) of measureme...
متن کاملInferring upwelling rates in the equatorial Atlantic using Be measurements in the upper ocean
Ocean upwelling rates are difficult to measure because of the relatively small velocities involved, and therefore are typically inferred from indirect methods such as heat budget estimates or tracer observations. Here we present the first results using a novel technique, based on the isotope Be, to infer rates of upwelling along the equator. Beryllium-7 (half-life1⁄453.3 d) is a cosmic-ray prod...
متن کاملGenesis of Indian Ocean mixed layer temperature anomalies: A heat budget analysis
The genesis of mixed layer temperature anomalies across the Indian Ocean are analysed in terms of the underlying heat budget components. Observational data, for which a seasonal budget can be computed, and a climate model output, which provides improved spatial and temporal coverage for longer time scales, are examined. The seasonal climatology of the model heat-budget is broadly consistent wit...
متن کاملSurface flux and ocean heat transport convergence contributions to seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content
We present an observation-based heat budget analysis for seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content (H) in the mixed layer (Hmld) and full-depth ocean (Htot). Surface heat flux and ocean heat content estimates are combined using a novel Kalman smoother-based method. Regional contributions from ocean heat transport convergences are inferred as a residual and the dominant drivers o...
